One of the signature events of the Town of Oakville's anti-litter initiative is gearing up for its fifth year!
The 20-Minute Oakville Makeover will once again ask employees, students and citizens to get outside for 20 minutes at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 24, 2009, and pick up litter around their workplace, school or home. Think how quickly we can clean and beautify the Town with just a small amount of time and effort! Please work with your supervisor, colleagues, neighbours, teachers or fellow students to plan your participation.
Last year's event in Oakville was a huge success, with over 10,000 people participating. Through your support we expect the 2009 event to be an even greater success!
How do I participate/register?
While registration is not mandatory to participate, it is appreciated and helps us measure our success.
Please let us know how many people are taking part at your 20-Minute Makeover location by:
- Filling out the online registration form.
- Calling the Town of Oakville at 905-815-6046.
- Picking up and filling out a hard copy of the registration form at various Town facilities - available April 7, 2009.
What does the Town provide?
The Town is making special lime-green plastic bags and single gloves available to participants free of charge (while supplies last). Starting April 7, bags and gloves can be picked up at various Town facilities and Pizza Pizza locations.
What do I do with my filled litterbags afterwards?
Please add your litterbags to your regular garbage collection day. Remember, the limit of six garbage bags still applies. If you think you'll collect more garbage, please email roadsandworks@oakville.ca or call 905-815-6046.
What do I do with recyclables collected with the litter?
If possible, please put any recyclables collected in their institutional or residential recycling containers.

Looking for more ways to reduce waste and do your part?
Check out the Town's Adopt-a-Road, Adopt-a-Parcel, and Adopt-a-Trail programs. Citizens, school and youth groups, as well as community and corporate organizations, are urged to help maintain the beauty of Oakville by "adopting" specific parkland areas and roads and keeping them litter free on a year-round basis, or by cleaning up specific areas throughout the community on a one-time basis. Groups adopting a trail or parks site for a year will be recognized by a sign at the entrance to the trail or park site.
