Heritage Register

A Heritage Register is an official list of properties identified by municipalities as having cultural heritage value or interest. It helps municipalities and property owners determine heritage value and identify opportunities to contribute to community heritage planning objectives.

The Register of Properties of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest is created according to Section 27 and Section 39.2 of the Ontario Heritage Act. The Register must list all designated properties under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act. The individually designated properties fall under Part IV of the Act and the properties within designated Heritage Conservation Districts fall under Part V of the Act.

A heritage permit approved by Council is required to make external changes to any structure and property and/or demolish or remove any part of the structure on a property that is designated under Part IV or Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act. Individually designated Part IV properties in Oakville that are located within a Part V heritage conservation district are excluded from the Part V designation. Designated properties are outlined in Sections A, B, C, and D of this Register.

In addition to the properties under Part IV and Part V of the Act, a municipality may list properties on the Register that are not designated, but which are believed to be of cultural heritage value or interest. These properties are outlined in Section E of this Register.

As of July 7, 2009, there are about 947 properties on the Town of Oakville Register of Properties of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest. The properties are divided into five sections as follows:

Section C: Register of Designated Heritage Properties under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act - First and Second Street Heritage Conservation District (pdf, 417 kB)

Section E: Register of Properties of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest - Not Designated (pdf, 862 kB)
These properties are not designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. There is a demolition restriction on each of these properties whereby the owner of the property is required to give the municipality 60 days notice to demolish or remove a building or structure from the property. The 60-day waiting period allows the municipality to consider designation of the property.

The information contained in this register has been collected and recorded under the authority of the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990 c.O.18.
