The Register of Properties of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest is created according to Section 27 and Section 39.2 of the Ontario Heritage Act. The Register must list all designated properties under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act. The individually designated properties fall under Part IV of the Act and the properties within designated Heritage Conservation Districts fall under Part V of the Act.
A heritage permit approved by Council is required to make external changes to any structure and property and/or demolish or remove any part of the structure on a property that is designated under Part IV or Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act. Individually designated Part IV properties in Oakville that are located within a Part V heritage conservation district are excluded from the Part V designation. Designated properties are outlined in Sections A, B, C, and D of this Register.
In addition to the properties under Part IV and Part V of the Act, a municipality may list properties on the Register that are not designated, but which are believed to be of cultural heritage value or interest. These properties are outlined in Section E of this Register.
