New Legislation
Cell Phone Ban - Ontario may introduce a ban on the use of cell phones, blackberries or other electronic devices while driving.  This proposal follows Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, which have all banned drivers from chatting and texting on handheld devices while on the road.  Head sets and hands-free devices are encouraged but can also be distracting.  The Town of Oakville has updated the General Use of  Town Vehicles, Equipment and Facility Resources Policy.

Workplace Violence - Violence and harassment have no place in the workplace.  Ontario is introducing new legislation that will amend the Occupational Health and Safety Act that would, if passed, help protect workers from workplace violence and harassment.  Employers will be required to develop a framework that would include policies and programs to help prevent workplace violence and harassment, provide protection to employees from domestic abuse in the workplace and allow employees to remove themselves from harmful situations.  These proposed amendments would enhance the province's existing Safe At Work Ontario Strategy.
