What is GIS?
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computerized mapping system used to store, retrieve, manipulate, query, and report on mapping and related information. We use GIS at the Town in a number of applications including, but not limited to:

  • Emergency Response
  • Planning and Development
  • Design and Construction
  • Asset Management
  • Building Permits and Zoning Issues
  • Legal Issues
  • Parks and Recreation
  • Urban Forestry
  • Finance and Property Assessment
  • Tourism
  • Economic Development
  • Transit
  • Municipal Elections
  • Mapping

GIS is a corporate resource managed by the Town of Oakville Information Systems + Solutions Department. Various departments maintain their respective layers but all data is made available to Town staff for the purpose of detailed analysis or any public inquiry.
