Oakville donates over $16,700 to Mayor's Haiti Relief Fund in one afternoon
Firefighters raised money with a fill-the-boot campaign at local grocery stores
Oakville, January 26, 2010 - For Immediate Release Mayor Burton thanked the community on Tuesday for donating $16,748.95 to the Oakville Mayor's Haiti Relief Fund. The money was raised during Saturday's fill-the-boot campaign organized by the Oakville Professional Firefighters Association (OPFA). The fundraising effort hoped to raise $5,000 but actual donations more than tripled the target amount.
"Our community demonstrated its willingness to help those in need and I am truly impressed by the generosity shown by our town," said Mayor Burton. "The firefighters came up with a great fundraising drive and raised more money than we ever expected. Thank you to everyone who made this a success."
Forty members of the OFPA volunteered their time on Saturday at five grocery stores around Oakville and collected donations. Firefighters encouraged shoppers to drop donations into their boots and collected money until they were full.
Oakville firefighters will continue to accept donations to the Oakville Mayor's Haiti Relief fund at all fire stations. Donations can also be made at any TD Canada Trust branch in Oakville.
All of the money raised through the fund will be donated to Doctors Without Borders and UNICEF Canada. The federal government will match donations made by February 12 for relief efforts in Haiti.
