Oakville Designated as the 2007 Forest Capital of Canada
Oakville, April 16, 2007 - For Immediate Release Today the Town of Oakville was officially designated as the 2007 Forest Capital of Canada. Each year the Canadian Forestry Association (CFA) recognizes a community or region that demonstrates stewardship and sound practices toward sustainable forest development, management and conservation.
"The Board of Directors of the Canadian Forestry Association is proud to designate of the Town of Oakville as the 2007 Forest Capital of Canada, especially this year as Oakville celebrates its 150th Anniversary," said Dave Lemkay, General Manager of The Canadian Forestry Association. "The Town's urban forest planning and management is evident in the beauty and integrity of its street trees, parks, woodlots and trails."
"We are honoured to receive this designation," said Mayor Rob Burton. "Enhancing our natural environment is a key goal for the Town and one way we can do this is by ensuring our urban forests are well maintained and protected. The preservation of our environment is a key component in making Oakville the most livable Town in Canada."
The Town of Oakville was recognized based on its strong track record of urban forest planning and management. Examples of the Town's leadership include:
- Being the first municipality in Canada to have the designation of Certified Forest for Iroquois Shoreline Woods Park, by the internationally recognized Forest Stewardship Council of Canada.
- Being the first municipality in Ontario to complete a community-wide Urban Forest Effects Model (UFORE) analysis.
- Having Official Plan policies that support its urban forest.
The Town joins a distinguished list of past Forest Capitals that include the County of Simcoe, ON (1982) Grande Prairie, AB (1997), La Mauricie QC (2001) and Alberta's Boreal (2005).
Established in 1979, the Forest Capital of Canada is a national program which focuses on the valuable role forests play in the socio-economic and environmental health of our communities - past, present and future. The designation of Forest Capital is bestowed to a different community each year.
