Capture the Beauty of Oakville's Forests, Enter the Oakville Urban Forest Arts Contest

September 23, 2009 - For Immediate Release
Oakvillegreen Conservation Association and the Town of Oakville invite local residents and students to capture the beauty of Oakville's urban forests by entering the Oakville Urban Forest Arts Contest. Short stories, songs, poems and photographs with the theme Our Future Forest, are wanted.

"For the past two years, we have asked residents to find local heritage trees through the Great Heritage Tree Hunt," said Liz Benneian, president of Oakvillegreen Conservation Association. "This year, we are asking our vibrant arts community to use their creativity to express their appreciation of Oakville's urban forests."

In addition, Oakville Grade 6 students from 26 designated Ontario EcoSchools have been invited to participate in a poster version of the contest. Entries from the schools will be officially recognized with a certificate from Mayor Burton and the top three posters will receive a $50 gift certificate from Chapters.

Judging will occur in January. Finalists and winners will be recognized at the third annual Urban Forest Awards, formerly the Heritage Tree Awards, at Town Hall in March 2010.

The Oakville Urban Forest Arts Contest and Urban Forest Awards aim to raise awareness about the value of Oakville's trees and recognize residents, schools and businesses that are contributing to a healthy urban forest.

Nomination forms and contest details will be available from the Oakvillegreen website. The contest closes Friday, November 27, 2009.  The Urban Forest Awards is made possible, in part, with a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to Oakvillegreen Conservation Association.
