Switching Gears Transportation Master Plan
Vision
Oakville's Transportation Master Plan (TMP) follows the Town of Oakville's strategic direction on how we will live in our community.
Summary
Switching Gears aims to develop a more balanced transportation system that provides a variety of travel options in Oakville. It's about sustainable transportation options including public transit, walking, cycling and ride-sharing along with strategic roadway improvements to ensure the safe, convenient and efficient movement of people and goods. Switching Gears will be a blueprint for addressing the short- and longer-term opportunities and challenges of getting around Oakville to 2031.

History
Switching Gears will highlight the important relationship between land-use and transportation, and reflect the town's existing policies and plans, including Livable Oakville and the Halton Region Official Plan.
The town's last TMP was completed in 2007. Switching Gears will update this study to ensure we plan a transportation system that supports the anticipated growth of our community, and aligns with other key studies that have been completed since the last TMP, including the town's Active Transportation Master Plan and Halton Region's Transportation Master Plan - The Road to Change.
Looking ahead
The town is currently working on defining the problems and opportunities, and developing and refining alternative solutions.
Next steps:
- Evaluate the solutions and identify the preferred alternatives, which will take us to spring 2012
- Develop the Transportation Master Plan document in March/April 2012, and move to seek required approvals from Town Council

Get involved
We need your help to better understand how residents travel to work, home and play! Your perspectives and priorities will help shape the focus of Switching Gears. Please share your ideas and comments with the project team and learn more about the transportation master plan update. You are also invited to submit ideas, comments and suggestions throughout the study via email, mail and phone.
The study will be carried out through a transparent public process as a master plan study under the Environmental Assessment (EA) Act. Community engagement is an important aspect of this process.
Discussions with stakeholders and the public will be held throughout the course of the study. The next public meeting will be held in spring 2012. Notices will be sent out to those on the mailing list, posted on the public notices page, and published in the local newspaper.
Ask a question
The first public open house for Switching Gears was held on October 19, 2011. Participants were led through a general discussion and were asked the following questions:
- What are key trends or contextual considerations that need to inform the Switching Gears Initiative (essential factors that must be taken into account)?
- What key questions or issues would you like the TMP to answer or address?
- What do you see as Oakville's key transportation-related challenges and/or opportunities?
- What might a 'more sustainable transportation approach' look like in the Town of Oakville? What are your aspirations?
- If Switching Gears did only three things to improve trips within the town, through the town, or to/from the town, what would you like them to be?
If you would like to share your thoughts with the team, please feel free to send us an email at tmp@oakville.ca.
