This is Councillor Mary Chapin's first term on Oakville Town Council, following two terms (six years) representing Oakville, Ward 3, at the Halton District School Board.

Upon moving to Oakville in 1997, Councillor Chapin joined the School Council at Oakville Trafalgar High School and continued to chair or co-chair the parent-teacher organization for the next two years. She also became involved with the Oakville Chapter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, accepting the job of recording secretary for their Executive Committee and canvassing door-to-door throughout a segment of southeast Oakville.

Councillor Chapin's interest in the historical aspects of old Oakville brought her to the Museum Advisory Board - where she was elected chair in 2002 and was acclaimed to that role for the next three years. This led to her being invited to work with three other citizen volunteers to devise and recommend a framework for the establishment of the new Cultural Advisory Committee (CAC) for the Town. As vice-chair of the Cultural Advisory Committee, she participated in the development of the Town's recently adopted Parks, Recreation, Culture and Library Master Plan. In 2001, Councillor Chapin participated on the United Way of Oakville's Steering Committee for its Social Research and Planning Initiative, where she helped the United Way Board set five new strategic priorities for the organization.

Councillor Chapin and her husband, Larry Asma, have two children, Matthew and Kate.
