The Premier of Ontario has declared a province-wide state of emergency and issued a stay-at-home order in response to rising COVID-19 variant infection rates.
To honour the life of Colonel Geoff Parker, a public commemoration was held in June 2010 at George's Square Memorial and Cenotaph. Born and raised in Oakville, Colonel Parker was killed in Kabul, Afghanistan on May 18, 2010, when a suicide car bomber attacked the International Security Assistance Force convoy he was travelling with. He was the highest-ranking Canadian Forces soldier to be killed in Afghanistan. A bronze commemorative plaque honouring Colonel Parker was unveiled as part of the tribute until a permanent feature at George's Square is designed and installed .
