Gairloch Gardens Shoreline Improvements

Building a better shoreline

The Town of Oakville has initiated as study to assess shoreline protection needs at Gairloch Gardens. Gairloch Garden is located at Lakeshore Road, east of Morrison Road. Existing shoreline protection has deteriorated and woresned further due to recent high lake level conditions in Lake Ontario. Rehabilitation options for the shoreline could include the following or a combination of the following:

  • Do nothing;
  • Use of armour stone/rip rap or bioengineering;
  • Lake infilling (e.g. ‘groynes’ which are walls that jet out from the shoreline, providing erosion protection);
  • Shoreline reconstruction;
  • Other sound and environmentally sensitive engineering solutions of an innovative nature.

Each option will be carefully evaluated based on a set criteria to achieve an overall benefit for the shoreline and neighbouring lands, while also taking into account cost and construction feasibility.
