Fixed Signs

Sign Permits and Information

Local businesses are important to Oakville’s economy and contribute to the town’s vibrant communities. Through the use of signs, local businesses can promote the goods and services they provide to generate business, create brand recognition within the community, and communicate broadly with the public.

Sign By-law 2018-153 sets out regulations for signs and requirements for sign permits. Please refer to the by-law for information relating to your sign application.

Submitting a Sign Permit Application

Do I need a sign permit to install a fascia or ground sign?

Yes, you need to apply for a sign permit anytime a sign is installed on a building or on the ground. You also need a permit when you alter an existing sign.

How much does a sign permit cost?

Fascia and ground sign permits cost $380 per sign. A sign alteration permit costs $56.00 per alteration. Additional fees will apply if additional approvals are required because the sign overhangs municipal property.

What happens if my sign does not comply with the regulations in the by-law?

There are options to apply for an exception, appeal or amendment to the regulations set out in the sign by-law.  Any sign that does not conform to the regulations set out in the by-law must start with a sign application. Once the application is submitted it will be reviewed and the options for further review and approval will be provided to the applicant.

An exception application and process will be available for any sign that is within an increase of 10 percent in height or sign face area of the regulations. Third party advertising signs are excluded from this process.

An appeal process may be available for any sign that has not been approved or is ineligible for the exception process.

An amendment process may be available for signs not permitted or identified in the by-law including an electronic message board that is not a ground sign and an increase in the total sign face area or height of advertising signs.
