Temporary signs (formerly Mobile Signs)

On January 1, 2019, Sign By-Law 2018-153 came into effect to set out regulations for signs and requirements for sign permits.

Under the new by-law, signs permitted for a specified period of time will now be classified as Temporary signs. Temporary signs will incorporate the following sign types:

  • mobile signs
  • wall banner signs
  • inflatable signs
  • feather banner signs

Community Mobile Signs

Community Mobile Sign are available at specific locations on town property to advertise an event held by a charitable or not for profit group whose primary purpose is to provide recreational, cultural or community services to the residents of Oakville.

Temporary signs (annual permits)

There are many sign types that require an annual permit under Sign By-Law 2018-153. Sign types that fall under this category are as follows:

  • pole poster sign
  • wall poster sign (fascia sign)
  • flag sign
  • window sign
  • A-frame sign (private property)
  • real estate fascia sign (non-residential)
  • real estate ground sign (non-residential)
  • hoarding sign

Temporary sign permit applications (21 day permits) should be submitted, as required, to secure a mobile sign location (subject to location availability).

Mobile Signs, Feather Banners, Inflatable Signs

Locations for mobile signs, feather banners and inflatable signs have been assessed by Municipal Enforcement Staff to ensure they conform to the regulations set out in the sign by-law.  Access the interactive mobile signs map (2018 edition) to identify potential locations and availability for mobile signs. The interactive mobile signs map has been updated to reflect the new locations based on the new sign by-law regulations.

Permit locations are available as follows:

  • Maximum display period of 21 days per permit approval.
  • Requirement of seven (7) day “blackout” period per location after a sign permit has expired before another sign permit will be approved for the same location.
  • Locations are available within 30m from another feather banner, charitable mobile sign or mobile sign located along the same property frontage.
  • Maximum number of display periods in a calendar year is sever (7) and is shared between feather banner and mobile signs.

Once you have confirmed a permitted location for your mobile signs you may submit a Permit application within the following timelines:

  • Maximum of 60 days prior to requested placement.
  • Minimum of three business days’ notice is required.

All completed applications should be submitted by email to enforcement@oakville.ca. In person applications will also be accepted. Payment may be made by credit card over the phone or in person.

Mobile signs in BIA districts and areas with no private property frontage

Temporary sign permits for businesses in downtown Oakville, Bronte area, or live/work areas must be obtained through the Engineering and Construction department.

Community mobile signs permits are issued to charitable or not for profit group whose primary purpose is to provide recreational, cultural or community services to the residents of Oakville.  Specific sign locations are available on town property with  two locations available per ward (assessed by the town).  Access the interactive mobile signs map (2018 edition) to identify potential locations and availability for community mobile signs. The interactive mobile signs map has been updated to reflect the all community mobile sign locations.

Permit locations are available as follows:

  • Permits issued for up to 14 days per permit approval.
  • Requirement of 14 day “blackout” period per ward for organizations after a sign permit has expired before another sign permit will be approved for the same ward.
  • Locations are available per ward. There are currently three (3) locations available per ward as identified on the application and interactive map.

Once you have confirmed a permitted location for your mobile signs please complete the Community Mobile Sign application. Applications may be submitted within the following timelines:

To apply for a temporary sign (annual permit) you must complete an Annual Temporary sign permit application and provide duplicate copies of sign drawings with the application. The application must include:

For real estate (non-residential) fascia signs, window signs, real estate (non-residential) ground signs, hoarding signs and poster signs

  •  The proposed sign, sign structure, location and height including: dimensions, copy design and materials and how the sign is affixed/installed in the ground.
  • All lettering and lighting (including colour, where applicable) on the sign(s).
  • All signs weighing more than 115 kg (253 lbs) must include a design sealed by a Professional Engineer or Architect.
  • Details of connection and fasteners to be used
  • Ground signs with height exceeding 7.5m must include a design sealed by a Structural Engineer or Architect.

For fascia signs, window signs or wall poster signs

  • Drawings and specifications showing the parts of the building to which the proposed sign is to be attached.

Written approval of the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario must be included if the sign is within 400m of a 400 series highway.

Proof of general liability insurance with the Town of Oakville named as additional or co-insured for no less than three (3) million dollars from sign contractor

Sign-related Fees

Fees can be paid in person at ServiceOakville located at Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Road. Payment may be made by cash, cheque, debit or credit card. If you are sending your application package by mail, please include a cheque for the correct fees made payable to the “Town of Oakville”.

Fees vary depending on sign type or if additional approvals are required because the sign overhangs municipal property.

Permit Completion and Sign off (after sign installation)

The sign owner is required to provide "as built" drawings to Municipal Enforcement Services. These drawings may be submitted in person or by mail as follows:

•Within ten (10) business days of the installation of the sign, the applicant must provide to the Municipal Enforcement Services Department:
–sign-off letter from the engineer or the sign installer confirming that the sign has been installed according to permit specifications.
•If sign is not erected within 6 months of application then folder is closed and applicant must reapply to initiate a new sign application review
 

Erecting a sign without first obtaining a sign permit could result in the sign being removed at the owner's expense as well as a fine up to $25,000 (first offence) and $50,000 (subsequent offences) to an individual and fines up to a maximum of  $50,000 (first offence) and $100,000 (subsequent offences) to a corporation
