This year’s Fire Prevention Week Kick-off event on Saturday, September 21, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oakville Fire Training Campus promises to ignite your weekend with a bucketful of activities for the entire family!
The Oakville Fire department invites you to have fun while learning about fire safety. Enjoy rescue demonstrations, the Junior Firefighter Challenge, Oakville Hydro bucket truck rides, the Teddy Bear Triage and more. Don’t forget your camera for tons of great photo ops.
“Please come out to this event with so much to see and do for the entire family,” Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said. “Fire Prevention Week acts as a welcome annual reminder of the vital importance of home fire safety— having a home fire escape plan and practicing it often, installing working smoke alarms on every level of your home, and checking them regularly.”
The festivities usher in the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office’s 2013 Fire Prevention Week which runs from October 6 to 12, 2013. This year’s theme is Prevent Kitchen Fires and encourages families to talk about and practice fire safety while cooking. Many of the activities at this year’s event play off this theme.
“Cooking is the number one cause of house fires and a significant contributor to fire-related deaths and burns,” Michael Harrison, Public Education Officer for the Oakville Fire department said. “Knowing how to practice safe cooking habits is a fundamental step in fire prevention.”
In addition to the fire safety presentations, other activities include inflatable air rides, smoke room simulator and fire safety games. Don’t forget to fuel up with a free lunch courtesy of Darlene Bryans, owner of McDonalds Restaurants of Oakville. Attendees are reminded to bring a refillable bottle to enjoy fresh and free water from the water bar.
Parking at the training campus is reserved for those with limited mobility or medical conditions. Take advantage of our free parking and shuttle service from Bronte GO Station courtesy of Oakville Transit. The Oakville Fire Training Campus is located at 1144 South Service Road West.
