Oakville celebrates 2014 National Youth Week with free events

Youth Week “passport to awesome” available now

The Town of Oakville will be offering seven days of free and fun events for youth aged 11 to 19 as part of the National Youth Week celebrations from May 1 to 7, 2014, at locations across Oakville.

“Youth Week events showcase the many activities available for young people in Oakville,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “The town offers a wide variety of facilities and parks for young residents to enjoy sports, art and cultural events, or just have fun with friends. Our great youth programming is a big part of what makes Oakville so livable.”

A Youth Week passport and event schedule can be picked up at any Oakville youth centre or community centre. Youth are encouraged to attend as many events as possible and collect at least five stamps on their passport for a chance to win a $300 gift card. Additional prizes will be awarded at selected events.

Youth Week event schedule

May 1

Open House at all Oakville youth centres from 4 to 6 p.m.

May 2

Discover the Ridge @ Iroquois Ridge Community Centre from 7 to 10 p.m. — gym games, crafts, cartoonist, beach party swim and more!
Glen Abbey Community Centre events from 7 to 10 p.m. — dodgeball tournament (age restrictions apply), BBQ and swim.

May 3

Kinoak Arena events starting at noon  — skateboard competition, Urban Art Design.
Tournament Night at Queen Elizabeth Park Youth Centre from 6 to 9 p.m.
Tune Up Music Night at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre from 7 to 10 p.m. Live performances by local youth in the Black Box Theatre!

May 4

Youth Fair at Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre from 1 to 4 p.m.
BBQ, carnival games, music and more!

May 5

Drop-in basketball at Glen Abbey Community Centre from 4:30 to 10 p.m. (Age restrictions apply.)
Youth Artz at all Oakville youth centres from 4 to 8 p.m.

May 6

Skateboarding at Iroquois Ridge, Glen Abbey and Shell Park from 4 to 6 p.m.
Outdoor activities at Bronte and Queen Elizabeth Park youth centres from 4 to 6 p.m.

May 7

Youth Week Wrap-up Party at all Oakville youth centres from 4 to 8 p.m.

In addition to the scheduled events, Oakville secondary school students will have free access to the fitness centres at Iroquois Ridge, Glen Abbey and River Oaks community centres during Youth Week. Students must be at least 14 years old and have a valid school identification card.

Youth who need transportation assistance to get to and from Youth Week events can pick up free Oakville Transit tickets at any youth centre.

Youth Week logo design contest winner

The Youth Week 2014 logo was designed by 17-year-old Abbey Park Secondary School student, Katherine J. Katherine’s design was selected from 15 concepts submitted by Oakville youth to brand Youth Week celebrations and events, earning her a $100 gift card. All youth who submitted logo designs were invited to a workshop with a professional designer to learn more about branding and design techniques.
