New youth centre opening in Glen Abbey in January 2016

Wed, 16 Sep 2015

Public invited to information session on Monday, September 28, 2015

Oakville youth will have access to a safe and supervised space with a wide range of services and resources when the town’s newest youth centre opens its door in Glen Abbey in January 2016.

“Engaging and involving youth in our community is one of our top priorities,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “We have seen great success with youth centres in other neighbourhoods and we’re excited about the positive impact this new location will have on the youth of Glen Abbey and the broader community.”

The new centre at 1131 Nottinghill Gate will replace the Oakville Youth Centre located at 177 Cross Avenue which has seen a decline in attendance in recent years due to a demographic shift in the neighbourhood. The town’s lease on that property expires in November and the centre will close November 1, 2015.

In 2012 the town’s Parks, Recreation and Library Master Plan identified the need for a youth centre north of the QEW. The new location was selected due to its ample space and close proximity to a large residential area with a significant population of children and youth. It is also situated within walking distance to three elementary schools, two secondary schools and is on an Oakville Transit route.

“Not only will the centre be a supervised space where young people can access homework help, computers, job search resources and an onsite library, it will also be a welcoming environment where everyone can feel a sense of belonging,” said Tricia Lewis, senior manager of Recreation Services. “We’re looking forward to sharing more details at our upcoming information session.”

The town will host a public information session about the new centre on Monday, September 28, 2015 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the St. Matthew Catholic Elementary School Library located at 1050 Nottinghill Gate.

Town staff will share information about youth programs and services, the proposed facility layout, amenities, and timeline for construction and official opening. They will also discuss opportunities for local youth to get involved in personalizing the centre.

The Town of Oakville was recently recognized as Youth Friendly Community with gold status for its outstanding commitment to providing young people with opportunities to play, participate in and contribute to their community.
