Plans for the former hospital lands and Brantwood school property are forging ahead following Council’s approval of official plan and zoning amendments for the two sites.
“We now have the certainty we need to proceed with two key projects,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “Having control of these properties allows the town to protect the character of the neighbourhood and optimize green space while providing for the much needed community centre.”
Both sites were part of the South Central Public Lands Study – a comprehensive land use study, completed in 2013 that evaluated options for four town-owned properties.
The Brantwood school property was purchased by the town in April 2012 upon being declared surplus. After consulting with the public, Council approved a concept plan for the site and directed staff to bring forward amendments to provide for:
The town took possession of the former Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital site in April 2016. In June 2017, following extensive community engagement, Town Council endorsed a master plan for the lands. Last night’s approval of the zoning and official plan amendments allows the town to implement the master plan which sees:
Council also directed staff to integrate the civic space into the overall design of the site by developing criteria that will ensure synergies and connectivity to the community centre and park already planned for the lands.
Building of the community centre and park are the first priority in the development of the former hospital lands. These new facilities are scheduled to open in fall 2020. Public consultation about the design of the park and the community centre will continue in 2018.
In addition, as part of the town’s development of a parks and open space strategy, community consultation will take place in 2018 to better understand the connections between the parks located in the south east Oakville neighbourhood, including Wallace Park.
