Oakville Transit drivers and maintenance workers on strike

Thu, 17 Feb 2022

All regular bus service suspended

Union members of Unifor Local 1256, which represents Oakville Transit drivers and maintenance workers, have rejected a tentative settlement and are officially on strike.

Effective today (February 17, 2022), there is no regular bus service or Home to Hub service. Oakville Transit’s specialized care-A-van service will operate for medical trips only with dialysis appointments given first priority. Given current staffing requirements and resources at this time, Oakville Transit cannot promise same-day trips for medical appointments (other than dialysis) and will work with customers to find a time that works best for them. Customers may contact 905-337-9222 to book a trip.

On February 8, 2022, after four days of bargaining, a tentative three-year agreement was reached between the town and Unifor that was competitive, fair and reasonable. This was a deal that both bargaining teams were satisfied with and agreed to recommend for ratification. Unfortunately, Unifor membership unexpectedly rejected this settlement in a ratification vote on February 13, 2022.

At this time, there are no scheduled talks between the two parties but the town remains willing and prepared to meet with the union to reach a resolution and get Oakville Transit services back on the road. The town appreciates everyone’s patience and cooperation during this time. For updates, visit the Oakville Transit website, the Town of Oakville website and follow @townofoakville or @oakvilletransit on Twitter and Town of Oakville or Oakville Transit on Facebook.

Quote:

“We are extremely disappointed that Unifor members turned down the very competitive and fair settlement that their bargaining team recommended. We remain optimistic the union will come back to the bargaining table to reach a reasonable resolution.”

Phoebe Fu, Commissioner, Community Infrastructure
