Tow truck and storage yard by-law amendment meetings

Thu, 07 Nov 2019

Community Services Committee (CSC) meeting
Monday, November 11, 7 p.m.
Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Road
Bronte/Palermo Rooms

Council Meeting
Monday, November 18, 7 p.m.
Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Road
Council Chamber

At the June 25 Special Council Meeting, Council approved Tow Truck Licensing By-law 2019-060 and amendments to Licensing By-law 2019-061 to include regulations for storage yards. Council also directed staff to report back with options for additional signage to support public education on towing regulations and storage yard fees.

On November 11, staff will be reporting back to CSC with proposed amendments to the tow truck and motor vehicle storage yard licensing by-laws. The decision of the CSC will be presented to Council on November 18.

Background

Following concerns from the public, the town is implementing tow truck and storage yard licensing by-laws beginning January 1, 2020 that will regulate towing prices and ensure that only licensed tow truck companies, including associated trucks/drivers, and vehicle storage yards operate in Oakville.

Why tow truck licensing?

Tow truck companies provide an essential service in our community. Licensing will help ensure that residents have safe, consistent and reliable options after a collision or breakdown or when their vehicle is towed from private property.
