The Town of Oakville is proposing to implement escalating penalties and fees to help address issues related to vacant properties or neglectful property owners. These regulations would be applied to all by-laws that utilize Administrative Monetary Penalties.

A draft vacant property by-law was presented to Council at the Planning and Development Council meeting on June 10. Council directed staff to gather further public input and report back in September with options to ensure vacant properties are kept in good repair. Recommendations for escalating penalties and fees will be presented at the Community Services Committee (CSC) meeting on September 16 and the decision of CSC will be forwarded to Council on September 23 for final approval.

Why the need for escalating penalties and fees?

Vacant and unoccupied buildings that are not maintained can become infested with pests, attract trespassers, and have negative impacts on property values. Staff believe that escalating penalties and fees can more effectively be used to encourage absent or neglectful property owners to comply with by-laws.
