Becoming a Candidate

To run as a candidate in the council and school board municipal elections, nomination forms must be filed with the Town Clerk.

The first day to file nomination papers for the 2026 municipal election is May 1, 2026. 

The role of Council and the role of head of Council can be found in the Municipal Act, Sections 224, 225, and 226.1.

Public information session

Individuals considering running for the role of Mayor, Regional Chair, Local or Regional Councillor in any of the Halton Region municipalities this October are invited to register for a virtual information sessions. 

Information about the sessions will be announced in 2026.

Mayor of the Town of Oakville

One to be elected at large.

Councillor for the Town of Oakville

Seven to be elected, one in each ward.

Councillor for the Town of Oakville and the Region of Halton

Seven to be elected, one in each ward.

Member (Trustee) of the Halton District School Board

Four to be elected in total. One for Wards 1 and 2 combined, one for Wards 3 and 6 combined, one for Ward 4, and one for Wards 5 and 7 combined.

Member (Trustee) of the Halton Catholic District School Board

Three to be elected at large.

Member (Trustee) of the Conseil scolaire Viamonde (French Public School Board)

One to be elected by all voters within the geographical area of the Regional Municipality of Hamilton-Wentworth, Regional Municipality of Halton, and the County of Brant. Nomination forms to be filed with the City of Hamilton.

Member (Trustee) of the Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir (French Catholic School Board)

One to be elected by all voters within the Region of Halton geographic area.

Chair of the Region of Halton

One to be elected by all voters of the Municipalities of the Region of Halton (being Oakville, Burlington, Milton, and Halton Hills). Nomination forms to be filed with the Region of Halton
