Policy statement
The Town of Oakville is committed to maintaining a diverse and qualified workforce with the knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary to provide high-quality services to the community. This includes attracting and retaining talented candidates who reflect the diversity of the community we serve, while selecting the best candidate for each position.
The Town is committed to ensuring its recruitment and selection processes and practices are fair, consistent, transparent, equitable and non-discriminatory, and address barriers for Indigenous peoples and historically disadvantaged groups at each stage of recruitment and selection.
The Town’s employment practices will be guided by the principles of the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, which set minimum standards for recruitment, hiring, employment, retention, and promotion.
An employee of the Town, a Member of Council or a member of a Local Board may not advocate for the employment of any individual by the Town.
Purpose
This policy is established to ensure that vacant positions within the Town are filled in a fair, transparent, equitable and consistent manner and on the basis of merit, to create a qualified workforce that is representative of the diversity of the community it serves.
Merit is defined as being worthy and deserving of consideration. The way in which this traditional concept of merit is interpreted and applied in the hiring process must be through an inclusion and equity-based lens. Merit includes formal qualifications, experience, credentials, and achievements as well as diverse skills, abilities, knowledge and perspectives.
Scope
This policy applies to current and prospective town employees, including full-time, temporary, part-time, students, Members of Council and appointees on Local Boards.
