Wear a poppy, observe two minutes of silence or attend a ceremony
Residents are encouraged to honour and remember those who have served, and continue to serve, Canada during times of war, conflict and peace on Remembrance Day.
Residents can pay tribute to our veterans and active service members by:
- Wearing a poppy and making a donation to the Poppy Fund
- Observing two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. on November 11 wherever they are
- Expressing gratitude online through social media by using #OakvilleRemembers hashtag
- Attending an in person ceremony
Local ceremony details
There are many ways to participate in the act of remembrance, including three local ceremonies in Oakville:
- The Bronte Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will host a walk from its location at 79 Jones Street to the Chris Vokes Memorial Park cenotaph, beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 9. The ceremony will follow from 10:50 a.m. to noon.
- A Remembrance Day parade to George's Square will begin at Oakville Trafalgar Community Centre, 325 Reynolds Street, at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11. The ceremony at George’s Square will follow. Attend in person or watch the livestream on the Town of Oakville’s YouTube channel.
- A ceremony will take place at Memorial Park at the Trafalgar Memorial on Tuesday, November 11 from 10:50 a.m. to noon.
Additional ceremony information can be found on the Royal Canadian Legion website.
The Poppy Project
In 2024, with approval from the Royal Canadian Legion, Sir John Colborne Recreation Centre for Seniors once again participated in the Poppy Project.
The initiative began in 2023, when dedicated volunteer Margaret Larson started crafting handmade knitted and crocheted poppies to honour those who sacrificed for our country.
In 2024, with help from other Centre members and the community, more than 750 poppies were created for display both inside and outside the Centre.
