Updates to Town's Fireworks By-law

At the June 23, 2025, meeting, Council approved a motion to refer the Sale and Discharge of Consumer Fireworks – Community Engagement Summary report back to staff for additional study and review. A future report with additional findings and updated recommendations will come back to Council at a later date. To learn more, please read the minutes of the Council meeting on our agenda page.

The Fireworks By-law prohibits the sale, use and possession of fireworks at all times for family use, also known as ‘consumer fireworks’.

Prohibited fireworks include any fireworks or explosives not authorized by the Government of Canada’s Explosives Regulatory Division within Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). The Fireworks By-law prohibits the possession, use or sale of any item in this category.

The sale and use of ‘novelty fireworks’, such as sparklers, Christmas crackers or caps for toy guns, is still allowed without the need to obtain a permit.

Display fireworks and pyrotechnics, such as those used in large shows or movie/stunt productions, can only be used by a licensed fireworks supervisor or pyrotechnician. A fireworks permit must be obtained from the Oakville Fire Department prior to their use.
