Celebrating accessibility and inclusion at Coronation Park’s renewed playground

Wednesday, July 16, 2025

Today, Mayor Rob Burton and Ward 2 Councillors Cathy Duddeck and Ray Chisholm, joined by Members of Council and Town staff, celebrated the ceremonial opening of Coronation Park’s renewed playground. The new playground has fully-accessible and inclusive features – the first of its kind in Oakville.

The Town is committed to eliminating barriers and providing accessible programs, services and facilities in a way that is integrated and promotes dignity and independence. The playground renewal project aligns with the Town’s commitment to being a vibrant and livable community for all through inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility (IDEA).

The new playground helps ensure children of all abilities have a place to play, build confidence and create community.

Some of the new features include:

  • Rubberized surfacing;
  • A universal carousel and gondola that are both wheelchair-friendly;
  • A sensory dome designed for inclusivity, featuring pathways and spacious areas to accommodate children with mobility devices and those with caregiver support;
  • A non-verbal communication board to allow children to effectively communicate through pictographs;
  • A suspended nest that provides a peaceful, calming space where children can feel connected to their surroundings without play; and
  • A high-contrast colour scheme that allows users to easily identify the entries and exits of the play structure.

Quotes

“The new fully accessible and inclusive playground at Coronation Park reflects the Town’s commitment to creating spaces where every child feels welcome, included, and free to have fun. These upgrades transform one of our premier destination parks into a place where children of all abilities and their families can play and enjoy together.”

— Mayor Rob Burton

Background

  • In 2024, the Town engaged with the community through an online survey to gather input that was integrated into the renewal of the playground equipment and structure at Coronation Park. Many of the requests made through the survey have been included in the new playground.
  • Laycon Construction was contracted for the site work in preparation for the rubberized surfacing and the play structure designed by Openspace Solutions.
