Oakville’s Automated Speed Enforcement program ends due to Provincial legislation to ban the use of municipal speed cameras

Friday, November 14, 2025

Effective immediately, the Town of Oakville’s Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program has ended, following the enactment of Bill 56, Building a More Competitive Economy Act, 2025, banning the use of municipal speed cameras.

The Town’s ASE cameras have been deactivated. In the coming days, staff will be removing the 14 cameras installed in various Community Safety Zones (CSZ) throughout Oakville, along with related signage.

Any ASE tickets issued prior to November 14 are still required by law to be paid. Those who wish to dispute their ASE ticket(s) can continue to do so through the Town’s screening process.

Oakville remains committed to road safety through its comprehensive Neighbourhood Traffic Safety Program (NTSP). While ASE is no longer in place due to Provincial legislation, other key components of the NTSP such as pedestrian crossovers, traffic calming measures and use of CSZs (where fines are increased for speeding) continue to be actively implemented to protect the community.

The Town reminds residents to slow down, follow all the rules of the road and obey posted speed limits as they are the law.

Background

  • On Monday, October 30, the Provincial Government passed the Building a More Competitive Economy Act and related initiatives, that would force the end of municipal speed camera enforcement, with impacted municipalities to end ASE programs by November 14.
  • The Town’s Neighbourhood Traffic Safety Program was approved by Oakville Town Council on October 18, 2021, with the goal of addressing speeding and aggressive driving in residential areas through various initiatives. The use of ASE was approved as part of the overall program, which launched on January 22, 2025 and has now ended effective November 14.
  • Town staff will be providing its annual progress report on the NTSP to Council on November 24, including a summary update on the use of ASE over the last 10 months.
