Notice of project: Burnet Park permanent art installation honouring Black History in Oakville

Tuesday, July 15, 2025

The Town of Oakville will begin construction of a new permanent art installation at Burnet Park, 76 Burnet Street, beginning the week of July 14. The work is expected to be completed by the end of September 2025. The project was designed by the Studio of Contemporary Architecture, and construction has been tendered to Avion Construction Group Inc.

The work will include:

  • Site excavation and removals
  • Grading, forming and pouring of new materials to build the artwork
  • Wall installation
  • Site restoration

The new permanent art installation honours Oakville’s Black History and community, as well as Samuel Adams, a free African American who became a prominent member of Oakville’s Black community after moving from Baltimore, Maryland to Oakville in the 1850s. It pays homage to the Adams family home that once stood at 104 Burnet Street and to Samuel’s profession as a blacksmith. The piece incorporates stones from the foundation of the family home and iron benches that call back to Adams’ iron work.
