Enhanced safety planning underway to support a safe and successful community celebration

At last night’s meeting, Council confirmed that the 2026 Canada Day celebration will be held at Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park, with enhanced safety measures and event planning improvements as a key focus.

At its February 23 meeting, Council directed staff to review event operations and explore potential alternative locations as part of a broader assessment of event logistics, safety considerations and long-term planning for large community events.

During last night’s discussion, Council reaffirmed the importance of Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park as the traditional home of Canada Day and approved hosting the celebration at the park, with enhanced safety measures as a priority.

Canada Day is one of Oakville’s largest annual community events, welcoming residents, families and visitors each year. Planning for the 2026 event is underway and will be coordinated with Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) and Town staff with a focus on public safety and crowd management.

HRPS has recently updated its policy to classify both Victoria Day weekend and Canada Day as Major Policing Events given the elevated operational requirements and risk levels associated with these dates. Canada Day planning will align with these enforcement and operational plans.

The Town will also retain an external event safety consultant to support crowd‑management and site‑egress planning, supplemented by increased on‑site staffing, volunteers, and event support resources as required.

Next steps

Staff will report back to Council on April 27 with recommended mitigation measures and operational plans for both Victoria Day and Canada Day, which may include potential by-law updates, temporary park and traffic adjustments aligned with police operations, proactive communications to residents and businesses, and targeted messaging to reinforce safe behaviour and by-law compliance during the event. Additional measures, such as lighting, fencing, and barricades, are also being reviewed as part of the overall safety plan.

To support the increased operations, an additional $75,000 will be allocated for the Town’s portion of the Canada Day event.

Staff will continue working with its partners to plan the 2026 Canada Day celebration, with additional event details to be shared as planning progresses.
