Key steps residents can take now to prepare, participate and shape their community
Decisions about local roads, parks, housing and community services are made at the municipal level. Voting is one of the most important ways to shape what’s happening in your neighbourhood and across Oakville.
With 101 days until the 2026 Municipal Election, here is how you can prepare, be informed and get involved.
Check the voters’ list
Take a minute now to check your information on the voters’ list. If you have moved recently, make sure your voting information matches your current address. If you recently turned 18 or became a Canadian citizen, be sure to add yourself to the list.
Updating your name, address and school support helps make voting easier this fall. Information from the voters’ list is used to mail voter information notices with details about where and when to vote.
Check or update your information online at RegisterToVoteON.ca before August 12, 2026. After this date, you will need to update your information online with the Town of Oakville.
Research the candidates
A list of registered candidates and ward map are on elections.oakville.ca. Take the time to connect with candidates and learn about their campaigns, including how they plan to support livability, accountability, mobility and an engaged community.
A final list of certified candidates will be available on the Town’s website on August 24, 2026.
Run as a candidate
Help shape the future of Oakville by running for Town Council or as a school board trustee.
The last day to file nomination paperwork is August 21, 2026 at 2 p.m. You must submit your paperwork in person.
Learn more about offices open for nomination, eligibility and next steps on our Candidate Resource page.
If you’ve thought about taking an active role in your community, register for a virtual information session on August 11. The session will feature a presentation from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing about election campaigning and finances, as well as information about election signs from the Town’s Municipal Enforcement Services department.
Future Voters program
Our popular Town of Future Voters initiative is back, introducing young residents to the voting process in a fun and interactive way.
Children and youth can cast their ballots on lighthearted topics such as their favourite animal, superpower and summer treats. By participating, children can experience what it is like to receive a ballot, make a choice and cast their vote.
Join the fun and stop by select community events throughout the summer and fall. A full list of dates is available online.
