Asian Heritage Month

Celebrating Asian culture and history throughout May.

In May, Asian Heritage Month is recognized across Canada. It’s an opportunity to learn about the diverse culture and history of Asian communities, and celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Asian heritage, throughout history.

How you can participate

Oakville residents are invited to take part in the following opportunities to learn and celebrate Asian Heritage Month.

Events taking place in Oakville:

May 1 to 5

  • Visit Oakville Museum on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5 between 1 and 4:30 p.m. for a fun, drop-in craft activity. Mark the spring migration by creating the Asiatic parrot or magpie and take a self-guided walk of the local neighbourhood in search for feathered friends using the museum’s backyard bird booklet.

May 6 to 12

  • Reserve your complimentary tickets to Spectrum of Connection, Little Pear Garden Dance Company at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts on Thursday, May 9 at 8 p.m. The show explores how communication changes our relationships and evolves our happiness through the art of movement and dance to original music by Tony K.T. Leung.  
  • Sakura (cherry blossom) season will be extended into May at the Oakville Museum on Saturday May 11, and Sunday May 12 between 1 and 4:30 p.m. Visitors can make paper cherry blossoms while learning about traditions from across Asia related to spring blossoms and tea culture. 

May 13 to 19

  • Learn about postage stamps from across Asia at the annual opening weekend of Oakville’s First Post Office located in Lakeside Park on Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19. Drop by Oakville Museum to try origami – the art of paper folding.
