Plan presents balanced transportation system that provides various travel choices for the community
Following a two-year study, which included extensive public consultation, best practices review, benchmarking and technical research, Council has approved the Town’s 2025 Transportation Master Plan (TMP).
The 2025 TMP, which replaces the previous 2018 Switching Gears and 2017 Active Transportation Master Plan, serves as a long-range plan that coordinates mobility solutions and services, transportation infrastructure and related policies through to 2051. This forward-looking blueprint, designed to shape the Town’s transportation network, outlines a comprehensive strategy to support Oakville’s continued growth while addressing climate change and fostering healthy, livable communities.
The TMP’s goals aim to create connected communities and transform how people move through Oakville by:
- Enhancing mobility and accessibility for all users
- Transitioning to sustainable travel choices like walking, cycling and transit
- Improving safety and efficiency across the transportation system
- Integrating land use and transportation planning
- Responding to climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions
- Leveraging emerging technologies
- Promoting equity and inclusion in transportation access
To achieve these goals, the TMP sets over 300 recommendations within six areas of focus, to shift Oakville’s transportation system from auto-centric to sustainable and multi-modal, to build a safe, connected, and future-ready network:
- Streets: design streets to improve capacity and safety while preserving Oakville’s character, to serve all users in a way that advances sustainable travel
- Transit: improve public transit reach, reliability and integration to support growth and shift mode share (measure of how people use multiple forms of transportation to complete trips) to enhance sustainable transportation
- Active transportation: expand and connect walking and cycling networks to improve safety, health and accessibility
- Emerging technologies and micro-mobility: prepare for future mobility trends including autonomous vehicles and micro-mobility options such as e-scooters
- Goods movement: improve freight efficiency while minimizing neighbourhood disruption and adapting to e-commerce trends
- Transportation Demand Management: reduce single-occupancy vehicle trips and shift travel behaviour toward sustainable alternatives
