Interim control by-law remains in place following appeal period

Following the end of the appeal period for Interim Control By-law 2026-129, with no appeals received, the Town of Oakville is continuing its review of planning policies and regulations for data centres and similar facilities.

Approved by Council on August 11, the by-law temporarily restricts new data centre development in specific areas of the Town for up to one year while staff examine the operation of these facilities and determine whether changes to its planning framework are needed.

The review will examine land use compatibility, infrastructure capacity, electricity and water demands, noise and environmental impacts, and the respective roles of municipalities and other agencies in planning for these facilities.

The Town has not received a formal development application for a data centre. The interim control by-law does not permanently prohibit these facilities, but rather provides time to complete the planning review and consider any necessary changes. Staff will continue the review and provide updates as the work progresses.

“The decision to act first means the appeal period is behind us, the by-law is secure, and the review now moves into its next phase. We will study the impacts and implications of data centres on our infrastructure, electricity, water, noise and the environment, so we have the right framework in place. Responsible development has to serve Oakville’s long-term interests, with no negative impacts on the services or community infrastructure our community depends on.”
