Town moves ahead with North Oakville East Commercial Study

Thursday, May 21, 2026

At the May 19 meeting, Council adopted Official Plan Amendment 338 (OPA 338), implementing findings of the North Oakville East Commercial Study to support the development of compact, mixed-use and complete communities north of Dundas Street, in North Oakville.

OPA 338 introduces and strengthens policies for retail and service opportunities throughout the North Oakville East Secondary Plan area, helping residents access shops, services and everyday amenities closer to home.

The study examined the quantity, scale, location and type of retail and commercial spaces needed to support future growth within the study area.

The Official Plan Amendment includes policy changes to:

  • Clarify and strengthen policies for retail and service uses in commercial and mixed-use areas, including clear minimum requirements and design expectations
  • Support more compact, walkable mixed-use communities with a mix of homes, shops, and services, through stronger design direction and clearer planning for phased development
  • Introduce new Commercial Nodes and refine Primary and Secondary Activity Nodes within North Oakville East to better organize growth and services

"The policies approved by Council provide more flexibility in where and how commercial space can be built, making it easier for the shops, services, and everyday amenities residents rely on to open their doors in North Oakville. This will help support walkability, transit, and a more vibrant local economy as our community continues to grow."
