Findings will support future planning for housing in Oakville

As part of Oakville’s Housing Strategy and Action Plan (HSAP), the Town is continuing to work on key strategic actions to support increased housing supply and improved affordability.

Part of this work is the recently completed Housing Needs Assessment, which provides a detailed report on Oakville’s current and future housing supply and affordability. The report identifies four key gaps where targeted action is needed to support a more balanced and inclusive housing system:

  • Affordability challenges for low- and moderate-income households
  • Limited supply of purpose-built rental housing
  • Housing types not aligned with household sizes
  • Higher housing needs among certain population groups

Based on these findings, the Town is considering a range of initiatives to support more diverse and affordable housing options. This includes updating Official Plan policies, assessing inclusionary zoning, and reviewing the potential for a Community Improvement Plan to encourage new projects.

Quote from Mayor

“Oakville’s Housing Needs Assessment demonstrates our readiness to deliver housing that meets the diverse needs of our community and strengthens our case for support from other levels of government. By enabling more housing options for the age groups we are currently losing, we can keep Oakville a complete community for all ages and fulfill our housing pledge.”
