International Day of Democracy highlights the importance of voting in the upcoming Municipal Election

The Town is marking International Day of Democracy by reminding residents to prepare for the upcoming Municipal Election. Observed annually on September 15, International Day of Democracy is a United Nations initiative that promotes democratic participation and civic engagement around the world.

Democracy thrives when everyone participates. Municipal government makes decisions that affect many of the services residents use every day, from roads and parks to recreation, transit and neighbourhood planning. Being informed is one of the easiest ways to prepare for voting day. 

Voter cards

Voter cards will be arriving in the mailboxes of eligible voters over the next couple of weeks. The voter card includes dates, locations and identification requirements to help residents plan their vote.

If you don’t receive a voter card, eligible voters are still able to vote. Residents are encouraged to check, add or update their voter information online using the Town’s Am I On the List tool. Being on the voters’ list helps save time at the voting location. 

Who can vote? 

To vote in Oakville's Municipal Election, you must:

• be a Canadian citizen
• at least 18 years of age 
• an Oakville resident, property owner or tenant, or their spouse

When you vote, you help choose the Mayor, Town Councillors, and Town and Regional Councillors who make decisions about how the Town operates. 

Before voting, take time to learn about the candidates running in your ward. A list of certified candidates and the offices to be elected are on elections.oakville.ca.

Advance voting offers several opportunities to vote before Election Day, making it easier to choose a day that works for your schedule. Advance voting is available October 7 to 10 and 13 to 18 at multiple locations across the Town. 

On Election Day (October 26) residents can vote at any location within their ward until 8 p.m.

Individuals with medical conditions or restricted mobility can request to vote at home. To register for this service, email elections@oakville.ca or call 905-815-6015 by October 18, 2026. 

If you are unavailable to vote during the election, you can have someone vote on your behalf. This is called a proxy. Students attending college or university outside of Oakville who will not be home for the election can also assign a proxy. Proxy forms are available online and must be submitted in person by your proxy at Town Hall. Learn more about Proxy Voting.
