The Bronte Village Commercial Parking Program will be expanded to include Sovereign Street between Bronte Road and Jones Street, and Marine Drive between Jones Street and Nelson Street starting this fall. The commercial paid parking program in Bronte Village, approved by Oakville Council as a permanent ongoing program on July 9, 2024, will offer 209 paid parking options.
Staff reviewed the Bronte Village paid parking area for opportunities to expand the program, ensuring that additional parking options are available for customers, residents and visitors and to redistribute the demand away from higher utilized roadways, such as Lakeshore Road West and Bronte Road.
A public open house was held on June 25 for members of the community to view the proposed parking expansion area based on the staff review and learn more about future expansion plans. Responses were supportive, with participants identifying the need for additional parking capacity.
The new paid parking areas will allow for extended parking time limits, supporting longer-term visits to the local businesses. Parking will be permitted for up to five hours on Marine Drive and nine hours on Sovereign Street, adding 58 additional on-street paid parking spaces to the current supply of 151 spaces. These permitted parking durations exceed the standard two-hour limit set in most municipal parking districts.
The Bronte Village Commercial Parking program was first introduced in July 2019 as a two-year pilot program, after residents, business owners and commercial property owners raised concerns that visitors to the area were parking for extended periods of time in the commercial district, leaving limited spaces for shoppers to park.
Future areas identified as possible expansion areas include:
- Marine Drive (Nelson Street to East Street)
- Nelson Street (Marine Drive to Ontario Street)
- East Street (Bronte Road to Ontario Street)
Payment can be made via single-space meters, multi-space pay-by-plate machines, or electronically through the HONK mobile app. Monthly permits are available for purchase on the Parking Permits page. Payment options, equipment types, and permit programs are consistent across all town paid parking programs.
Parking revenue is allocated for the management, maintenance, and enforcement of current parking operations. Revenue is also reinvested into the parking program to provide funding for future parking initiatives to support the community.
