Oakville encourages residents to plan ahead, seek expert advice and prioritize safety during Building Safety Month
Planning to build a new deck, renovate your kitchen, finish your basement, or add a rental unit? Whether you’re installing a pool, building a shed, or adding solar panels, spring is when many residents start turning project ideas into reality. Taking the right steps early can help ensure your project is safe, legal, and avoids delays.
May is Building Safety Month, and the Town is encouraging residents to learn more before starting home construction or renovation projects. Understanding the requirements upfront can help you reduce risks and move your project forward with confidence.
To ensure your project runs smoothly, consider these three key tips:
1. Understand the rules
Many projects require a building permit and must meet the standards outlined in the Ontario Building Code and the Town’s Zoning By-laws. Understanding which rules apply to your project at the outset can help you avoid roadblocks down the line. Need to apply for a permit? The Town’s streamlined process makes it easy to apply, track, and manage your application.
2. Seek expert skills and advice
If you’re unsure where to start, reach out to the Town’s Building Services team at buildingrequests@oakville.ca. They can provide valuable guidance on permit requirements, timelines and next steps. Working with experienced, licensed contractors is just as important, helping to ensure your project is completed safely and to code. Get started with the Town’s listing of licensed contractors.
3. Plan ahead
Inspections are required at key stages of construction to confirm work meets safety and quality standards. Be sure to book your inspection with the Town to ensure your project meets requirements for structural integrity, fire safety, accessibility and energy efficiency.
Building by the numbers
- In 2025, the Town issued 2,038 building permits, representing a total construction value of more than $1.3 billion.
- Since the start of 2026, the Town has issued 610 permits, with 545 applications currently under review.
These figures highlight the steady pace of development in Oakville and the Town’s role in supporting safe, well-managed growth across the community.
This year also marks the 70th anniversary of the Ontario Building Officials Association (OBOA), recognizing the important part that building safety professionals play in protecting homes, workplaces, and communities.
You can find more information and resources on regulations, permits and inspections on the Town’s Building Permits and Inspections webpage.
