East Morrison Creek Erosion Mitigation Study

The study aims to identify erosion risks, define erosion hazards, and develop solutions to mitigate erosion for East Morrison Creek.

About the study

The town is carrying out a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment to identify erosion risks, define erosion hazards, and develop preferred options to mitigate erosion for the East Morrison Creek.

This study will follow the planning and design process as defined in the Municipal Engineers Association Municipal Class Environmental Assessment document (October 2000, as amended in 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2023) as a Schedule B project.

Study area

The study area extends from the Morrison-Wedgwood diversion channel, directly east of Oakville Town Hall, upstream to the culvert at Postridge Drive. This area of concern was identified in the 2021 Creek Inventory and Assessment Study.

Project phases and progress

There are four phases to this project:

  • Phase one – Problem definition
  • Phase two – Development and review of options
  • Phase three – Preferred alternatives selection and preliminary design
  • Phase four – Preparation of environmental study report

Progress and next steps

December 18, 2023 - The town initiated the East Morrison Creek Erosion Mitigation Study. Read the full notice of study commencement

Most tasks in Phase one were completed in 2023 with the exception of hydraulic modelling and channel condition analysis. Both are tasks that require on-going updates as the project progresses. Key tasks completed include:

  • Background information review
  • Topographic survey and geomorphic assessment
  • Ecological inventories
  • Geotechnical investigation
  • Agency pre-consultation
  • Archaeological resources screening

All tasks in Phase two have been competed including:

  • Development of alternative solutions
  • Infrastructure assessment
  • Preliminary designs

A public information centre was held on September 17, 2024 to present findings to date to the public.

The following key tasks have been completed as of the end of June 2025:

  • Evaluation of alternative solutions
  • Preliminary functional design
  • Public consultation

Feedback from the upcoming PIC will be considered in Phase four and an Environmental Study Report (ESR) will be prepared for public review.
