Civil Marriage Ceremonies

Everything you need to know about getting married at Town Hall.

Ceremonies are offered on Thursdays and Fridays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. 

The fee for a civil marriage ceremony is $400 including HST. We accept payment by Visa, Mastercard or American Express. Cash will not be accepted. 

The fee includes:

  • a registered officiant
  • use of a space at Town Hall for your vow exchange
  • approximately 10 minutes for photos after your ceremony.

Make a request

To request a ceremony you will need to provide:

  • A scanned copy of your current and valid Ontario marriage licence to: PublicInquiries-Clerks@oakville.ca
  • Preferred date range and time frame being requested
  • Booking arrangements must occur a minimum of five business days prior to your ceremony.

Booking arrangements can be made at any time within 90 days of the receipt of your marriage license.

Confirmation

After submitting your request will receive an email either confirming your request or advising of availability.  If your requested date and time is available you will need the following to confirm:

  • Payment of $400 by credit card will be requested by telephone within 24 hours.
    • We accept payment by Visa, Mastercard or American Express.

On the day of the ceremony, the couple to be wed need to bring: 

  • Your valid marriage licence 
  • One piece of current, valid and original photo identification (passport, drivers licence, Ontario photo ID card) for the couple

If you are late for your ceremony or do not have the required documents, witnesses and/or interpreter (as needed), the Officiant may cancel the ceremony.

Attendees

A maximum of nine persons, including the couple, their witnesses and interpreter (if required) are permitted.

Ceremony format, rules and etiquette

  • No religious connotation shall be contained in the ceremony
  • Alcohol or stimulants are not to be used by the applicants or their witnesses prior to or during the ceremony
  • The Officiant may cancel the ceremony if this rule is violated
  • No alcohol is permitted on Town of Oakville property
  • No decorations, confetti, bubbles, candles or incense are allowed on the grounds of Town Hall
  • No music will be provided

On the day of the ceremony, the couple to be wed need to bring:

  • One piece of current, valid and original photo identification (passport, drivers licence, Ontario photo ID card) for the couple

Interpreter

It is the responsibility of the applicants to provide an interpreter if they do not speak English and/or require language assistance. The interpreter may not be one of the witnesses. The interpreter will be required to sign a form confirming that he/she has accurately interpreted the wedding ceremony.

Parking

Parties are requested to arrive approximately 10 minutes prior to their scheduled time and park in the North Parking lot (second driveway on the right when coming from Trafalgar).

Your officiant will meet you and your party at the exterior door to provide access to Council Chambers.

Vow options

Witnesses

Two witnesses are required to be present during the ceremony. The witnesses must be a minimum of 14 years of age and should be able to understand and appreciate what is taking place and be able to give evidence of such at a later date, if required.

  • Any revisions made to a civil marriage service date or time are subject to an additional $61 revision fee and may be made no later than three business days prior to the ceremony.
  • Changes may only occur in the booked calendar month pending availability.
  • Any request for cancellation made with less than three business days’ notice will forfeit any fees paid.
  • Any request for cancellation with more than 3 business days’ notice will result in a refund of $249.99 paid by cheque within two to three weeks ($400 booking fee less the $150.01 Administrative fees).
    • Cancellation requests must be made in writing including your scheduled date, time, the names of both parties and current and valid mailing address.
