Marine Drive Traffic Calming Measures and Road Resurfacing

We're resurfacing Marine Drive and adding traffic calming features.

About this project

The Town of Oakville is developing the design of traffic calming measures on Marine Drive from East Street to Third Line. The objective of this initiative is to reduce speeding and enhance overall road safety for all users through the implementation of horizontal traffic calming measures.

This project forms part of the Town’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety, improve traffic operations, and support a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.

Project status

We are currently in the detailed design phase of the Marine Drive project.

What we heard

Overall support for improving road safety

Residents supported the proposed traffic calming measures, recognizing the need to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for pedestrians and other road users.

Concerns about speeding and driver behaviour

Speeding by motorists and motorcyclists was the most common concern. Residents also noted aggressive driving and traffic noise, and requested additional enforcement and lower speed limits.

Mixed opinions on traffic calming features

While many supported curb extensions, lateral shifts, and landscaped raised medians, others questioned the need for traffic calming or preferred speed humps instead. Some residents were concerned about potential impacts on cyclists and traffic flow.

Requests for pedestrian and intersection improvements

Residents requested enhanced street lighting at East Street, improved pedestrian crossings and pavement markings at Third Line, and supported the proposed pedestrian crossover at Windhaven Place/Southaven Place.

Concerns about access, emergency services, and property impacts

Feedback highlighted potential conflicts with the proposed median near the 2185 Marine Drive condominium, emergency vehicle access to nearby condominiums, driveway access, and construction-related disruptions.

Desire for coordinated transportation improvements

Residents encouraged the Town to coordinate this project with nearby construction activities and raised broader concerns about speeding and traffic conditions on Lakeshore Road to minimize disruption and improve the overall transportation network.
