About the project
The commercial parking program was introduced as a pilot program in Bronte in 2019. The pilot was introduced to improve vehicle turnover in the commercial district and therefore increase the availability of spaces for shoppers visiting the commercial area. Charging for parking in commercial shopping areas is a common way to promote turnover and manage parking supply.
On July 9, 2024, Council approved the Bronte commercial paid parking program to continue as a permanent ongoing program under the self-funded parking program. As part of the commitment to Council, the expansion of the commercial parking program area was identified as a review to be undertaken.
Commercial parking in Bronte
The commercial parking area in Bronte spans between from Ontario Street to Lakeshore Road West to the north, and between Bronte Road to Nelson Street.
The commercial parking area in Bronte currently offers upwards of 170 parking spaces (number subject to change due to construction) and includes specialized parking spaces for parking with accessible permits and EV vehicles.
The parking program in Bronte Village uses a similar format (hours, rates. and fees) as existing municipal parking operations in other areas, which operates paid parking from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The commercial program is currently offered on street only and sees a higher demand frequently due to the popularity of attractions and businesses in the area.
Proposed expansion area
The review of the commercial area in Bronte considers the community needs and areas where paid parking would be beneficial to improve turnover and supply to the area. Permitted length of parking stay and location of paid parking within the business district has been reviewed to determine opportunities to expand the program and provide parking programs to assist the local business community.
