About this project

The Town of Oakville is installing new, permanent artwork that honours and celebrates Oakville’s Black History, community, and heritage. The artwork will incorporate lake stone salvaged from the foundation walls of a former heritage property at 104 Burnet Street. For more than 100 years, this property belonged to the Adams family, who were prominent members of Oakville’s Black community. Although the home was demolished in 2017 due to fire damage, the salvaged elements will commemorate the legacy and contributions of the Adams family, as well as their relatives and descendants and their importance to Oakville.

A plaque was installed in the park in November 2019 with the intention of using the lakestone in a future commemorative piece. Descendants of the Adams family have worked with Town staff and the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton to ensure that the artwork would be designed by Black artists and reflect on and celebrate the contributions of the Black community to Oakville.
