Planning process and need for the playground 

Residents questioned the need for an additional playground in the area, noting the presence of nearby playgrounds that they perceive to be underutilized. A few residents indicated a preference for preserving the space as a green space rather than developing it into a playground. As well as gathering further demographic studies for the area.

Safety concerns 

Safety was the most frequently raised concern. Residents noted:

• The proposed playground's proximity to the parking lot and the potential risk posed by vehicle traffic.
• Concerns about children moving between the playground and parking areas. 
• Existing traffic conditions in the area, including concerns about vehicle speeds.
• E-scooter activity and the possibility of youth congregating in the area. 
• Concerns that additional visitors and vehicles could be attracted to the site. 

Residents shared personal experiences involving children being struck by vehicles and scooters in the area, which contributed to their concerns about introducing a playground at this location. 

One resident, however, expressed support for the proposed playground, noting that existing routes to nearby playgrounds require crossing busy roads and that a closer playground would provide a safer and more accessible destination for local children. 

Drainage and site conditions

Residents raised concerns regarding existing drainage issues within the green space. One resident indicated that the area becomes very wet following rainfall and suggested that staff visit the site after a rain event to observe conditions firsthand.

Questions were also raised about whether the proposed development could alter drainage patterns or contribute to flooding on adjacent properties. 

Parking and traffic impacts

A number of residents expressed concern regarding parking and traffic impacts, including:

• Potential overflow parking associated with the playground. 
• Existing parking pressures in the neighbourhood. 
• Increased vehicle traffic and pedestrian activity.
• Potential conflicts related to visitor parking and enforcement. 

Several residents suggested that parking would become a significant challenge if the playground were developed. 

Privacy and proximity to adjacent homes

Residents living adjacent to the proposed site voiced concerns regarding the close proximity of the playground to their homes. Specific concerns included: 

• Increased noise and activity adjacent to private residences. 
• Reduced privacy and the potential for playground users to look into nearby homes. 
• The feeling that playground users would be immediately adjacent to residential properties and condominium units. 

Some residents indicated that the playground would significantly affect their enjoyment of their properties due to its proximity. 

Condominium board concerns

A representative of the condominium board raised several concerns, including: 

• Increased pedestrian traffic through the area and additional informal access points.
• Potential liability concerns related to injuries occurring in or around the playground area. 
• The impact of increased activity on condominium operations and management. 
• Existing challenges related to parking enforcement. 
• Concerns regarding privacy and resident impacts resulting from the playground proximity to condominium units. 
• Opposition to construction activities associated with the proposed playground. 

The representative also suggested that project funding could be directed toward enhancements at other nearby waterfront and playground locations. 

Supportive comments

While most comments expressed concerns, a couple resident spoke in support of the project and the creation of a community gathering space. The residents noted: 

• Support for improving recreational opportunities for children and families. 
• Concerns that nearby playgrounds are not easily or safely accessible by foot due to busy roadways. 
• The belief that a neighbourhood playground would provide a safer option for local families. 
• A view that some opposition appeared to be focused on the presence of children rather than the merits of the project itself. 

Overall summary

Resident feedback focused primarily on safety, parking, drainage, privacy, liability, and the perceived need for a new playground. Many neighbouring residents expressed a preference for retaining the site as green space and raised concerns about increased activity, traffic, and impacts on adjacent properties. A smaller number of participants voiced support for the project, citing improved accessibility to play opportunities and the creation of a local community space for families.
