Taxis and Limos

Taxis and limousines are regulated under the town's Licensing By-law to ensure that they are clean, safe and reliable and that rates are standardized.

Taxi regulations

Taxi drivers are well-trained and can help you with general information about points of interest, shopping areas, major public buildings and hotel/motel locations in Oakville and the nearby area. 

The regulations set out in Schedule 34 of the Business Licensing By-law amendment 2018-051 ensure that you will be taken to your destination:

  • On the most direct route possible.
  • In a vehicle that is clean, safe and reliable.

Rates

Standard taxi rates and tariffs within the Oakville are approved by Council through the Business Licensing By-law. Brokers or operators wishing to charge more than the approved rates must submit updated rates to the Municipal Enforcement department 30 days before the date that the new rates will be applied. 

Brokers may offer negotiated rates for fare outside of the town with discounted rates for fares booked directly through the broker, or surge pricing based on bookings through a mobile app.

By distance

  • For the initial 130 metres or part thereof: $4.50
  • For each additional 130 metres or part thereof: $0.25

Waiting time

  • For each added 30 seconds of waiting time while in use: $0.25

Packages, luggage, etc.

  • Each trunk 3 cubic feet (0.76 cubic metres) or larger - included in fare
  • Hand baggage, groceries, wheelchairs, walkers, etc. - included in fare

Seniors' discount - 10 per cent

  • Proof of age is needed.
  • Flat rate trips do not get a discount.
  • Discount not applied on fares below $10.

Taxi brokers and independent operators who have submitted higher rates and tariffs to the town and receive approval can charge higher rates and tariffs than the standard rates approved by Council.

Increased rates must be submitted to the Municipal Enforcement department 30 days in advance of the intended effective date of the rates. Submitted rates must remain in effect for a minimum of 90 days before further changes can be made. Upcoming changes to rates as well as current rates must both be advertised.

  • Starting metre rate: $5.50
  • $0.25 per 123 meters

Limos in Oakville are regulated by the Business Licensing By-law 2015-075 Schedule 19.  

Ride sharing companies

As of February 1, 2017, ride sharing companies, also known as transportation network companies (TNCs), require a business license to operate in the Town of Oakville.
