Midtown Strategy

A long-term vision and policies for Midtown Oakville.

Midtown Oakville - the area around the Oakville GO Station - was identified as an Urban Growth Centre in the 2006 Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

The Livable Oakville Official Plan sets out a long-term vision and policies for Midtown Oakville. The policies enable the area to transform into an urban mixed use community for about 12,000 people and 8,000 jobs by 2031.

Initiated in 2014, the goal of the Midtown Strategy studies was to confirm and refine this vision, and to identify tools and measures to provide for its implementation.

The 2014 Midtown Strategy consisted of three major studies:

  1. Midtown Oakville Class Environmental Assessment
  2. Midtown Oakville Parking Strategy
  3. Designing Midtown Oakville (urban design guidelines).

The recommendations of these studies will inform updates to the Livable Oakville Official Plan and Zoning By-law 2014-014 to continue to support the long-term redevelopment of lands in Midtown Oakville.

Reports about the Midtown Strategy studies were presented at a Special Planning and Development Council meeting on May 27, 2014. At the same time, a statutory public meeting was held to receive public input about town-initiated official plan and zoning by-law amendments to support the redevelopment of Midtown Oakville. Those amendments were subsequently put on hold.

Official Plan Amendments

In 2017, Council adopted OPA 14: Midtown Oakville and Transportation Network Updates OPA.

This town-initiated official plan amendment (OPA) to the Livable Oakville Plan affected all lands south of Dundas Street. The primary purpose was to update the planned transportation network to support the long-term redevelopment of the lands in Midtown Oakville.

OPA 14 was adopted by Council on September 11, 2017 and modified by the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal in file number PL171100.

Growth Area Review

The Midtown Oakville Growth Area Review is now underway as part of the town's ongoing Official Plan Review.
